The Inclusion block celebrates how drama meets all educational requirements across a broad variety of areas. Delegates will be able to select from; specific areas like boy’s education, girl’s education, working with students on the autism spectrum, working with disabled students, gifted and talented and challenging students. The aim is for delegates to be introduced to specific approaches or techniques that can be adapted or implemented in the classroom. Scope is spread across the two days in the afternoon and allows delegates to focus on primary to Tertiary education. The presenters in Scope range from highly experienced drama educators, university lecturers and industry professionals providing a broad range of experience to delegates. The Encompassing the Production Process block is a chance to develop skills in particular areas of stagecraft. We understand that the production is a big undertaking for the drama educator in a school environment and have offered a broad range of workshops for delegates to engage with.
The keynotes this year for Encompass cover all that drama education offers and will explore the status of the National Curriculum. Our first keynote is Jo Raphael discussing Drama, diversity and a theatre of possibility with members of Fusion Theatre. This keynote describes how the drama workshops aim to explore issues of disability and inclusive education through applied drama, group work, reflection and analysis. It also reports on some of the findings of an associated research project that investigates how participation in drama workshops led by people with disabilities might enhance pre-service teachers’ understandings about teaching for diversity and in particular, teaching students with special educational needs. Our second keynote will be a forum of panel members discussing the National Curriculum. The Forum will be led by Peter Robert (Head of Drama at Xavier College) and paenl members will be Mark Bailey (president of Drama Australia) Helen Champion (Performing Arts P-12 Curriculum manager, Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) and Richard Gill (Musical Director for Victorian Opera). It promises to be an enriching discussion about the National Curriculum and what it means for us as drama educators.
The Compass Points will allow delegates to connect and network within their regions and discuss key pedagogical questions. It was obvious last year that some regions were bigger than others and we will break larger groups into more managable sizes to gain maximum outcomes. Primary educators will also get the opportunity to form theor own group and discuss particular issues that they face in the classroom.
Please see below for a breakdown and timings across the two days. A timetable will be provided for all delegates in their showbags so you do not need to print this information.
